I've always been told you should _not_ use apt-get dist-upgrade to upgrade
between versions, rather use something like dselect or the myriad of
alternatives, as they handle the recommends and suggests much better. This
may of course be old information at this point though, I've been away from
the deeper workings of the Debian world for a while.
And I'd have to agree with Greg regarding doing a fresh install - when I'm
upgrading production systems I much prefer to have a new box and install to
that. It means you also have a fallback point to go to if it all goes pear
shaped. Of course, this doesn't apply hugely to a home situation.
