Back in my day we did not require an exec member to be present during a
meeting - it was sufficient for a representative appointed by the exec to
be present. I believe the current arrangement (of an exec member being
needed to open & close) comes about out of a belief that these individuals
were elected by the members and therefore are representing the membership.

If we accept that it is necessary to elect anyone who is going to look
after the meeting, why be limited to the executive? Following the
election of the executive at the AGM the club could go on to elect
"meeting captains" who could share the load of managing meetings with the
exec. That title is right off the top of my head. No doubt someone can
come up with a better one.

I'd be disappointed if the meetings were shortened. I don't get to go to
meetings much these days due to the tyrany of distance but if I did I
would enjoy staying late as I always did.

If it is deemed that those managing the room _must_ be exec members, then
we could extend the executive with a number of "general executive member"
positions.

Just some thoughts.
