Actually to be fair it isn't that hard to get the codecs and stuff 
installed and is still quicker then when I set up a Gentoo machine as I 
spend all weekend compiling the system but thats just how I prefer to 
use my system. I like source based distros on my desktop machine as I 
find you have access to just about everything and can compile support in 
for whatever you want.

Fedora is a general distro I use it at work quite happily but at home I 
use Gentoo on desktops and debian on my router/firewall. You really need 
to decide what you like every humbuger will tell you something different.
