Ask a dozen of us and you will get a dozen answers. Both Debian and
SuSE come with a lot of software, greatly increasing your choices if
what we recommend is not entirely suitable. Personally, I consider
SuSE to be more user friendly for someone coming from Windows.

There are many ways of running Windows programs under Linux, with
varying degrees of success. I don't do this myself, so I will leave
this to the more knowledgeable.

The GIMP (get a recent version 2) is the tool to use for photo
manipulation. I don't know about yahoo instant messaging, but there
are several candidates to choose from. Video capture does depend on
the device you are capturing from. I have generally had good results
with Kino when capturing from digital video cameras. All my video
editing is done with cinelerra, although I do a little bit with the
GIMP, which has some tools that are useful for video work. K3b is a
good DVD burning tool. I have no experience with DVD authoring, but
there are a couple of tools available that claim to do the job.
