I'd try a new cable first. Much cheaper if it works. I've had hard 
drives I was sure were dead and just had a cable that had died. Or a 
motherboard IDE channel that had died (had more than one of those go on 
me!). Things that looks like a dying hard drive aren't always that. I'd 
test the hard drive in another machine with the manufacturer's testing 
suite before throwing it in the bin or returning it on warranty 
(depending on how new/old the drive is).
