Hardware isnt an issue as long as it is linux compatible, I use a 
PVR-250 for video capture and up till it blew up, an X-Box for the 
frontend in the loungeroom (did I mention the MS makes a fantastic 
platform to run mythtv frontends from) . These days I use a Via Epia M 
board in a small case running a netbooted minimyth distribution for the 
frontend.

Make sure you get a card whose remote control is supported, lirc is not 
so much the hardest, but possibly the most time consuming part of a good 
mythtv setup.

Michael seems to have covered the rest. You can do worse than join the 
mythtv-users mailing list. Just be prepared for alot of the same 
"Ultimate mythtv hardware" noise every other day.
