[H-GEN] Scanning Slides

Hi All.....my wife has several 1000 slides that are gathering dust and
starting to deteriate....she would like to have them on CD or
DVD.....has checked the commercial price and is way too high....i
remember there were around some hardware slide readers available but
havent seen an ad for them in a while.....
does anyone know of a product that is available to  do this job and
where they could be available....
of course they must run under Linux ...
