Hi Guys,

I have a problem getting sound working on my desktop.

It's a brand new Asrock K7VM3 motheboard (AMD Sepron). Most of the internals are of the Via chipsets. As follows:

$ /usr/sbin/lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc.: Unknown device 3205
00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc.: Unknown device b198
00:10.0 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB (rev 80)
00:10.1 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB (rev 80)
00:10.2 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB (rev 80)
00:10.3 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB 2.0 (rev 82)
00:11.0 ISA bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8235 ISA Bridge
00:11.1 IDE interface: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C586/B/686A/B PIPC Bus Master IDE (rev 06)
00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)
00:12.0 Ethernet controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6102 [Rhine-II] (rev 74)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: VIA Technologies, Inc.: Unknown device 7205 (rev 01)

As you can see, the sound device is a Via 8233, which should coorelate to the via-82xx alsa driver. Which I have compiled and loaded as a module in both the 2.6.6 and 2.6.11 kernels with no luck.

The module itself and all other dependant modules load fine, no errors appear.

alsamixer also works ok, and lists the various channels.

aplay even lists the devices.

However, any sound that is played, results only in a crackling noise similar to that of an 8ohm speaker with it's wires rubbing across a battery.

I'm also running the latest version of alsa. 1.0.8.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions...
