Seems to work fine for me (FF 1.0.6, Flash v7.0, WinXP). However, to 
turn off the plugin, go to the tools menu, choose options. Go to the 
downloads options and click the plugins button. You should be able to 
untick the automatic association with .swf (and any other appropriate) 
files. I have no idea if this works but it 'should'.
