In the past ADSL modems were "dumb" and it was the PC that needed to 
send the username/password to the ISP.

Now most (if not all) are "smart", you configure them with a web 
browser, setting up your username and password. It will connect to the 
internet as soon as it is turned on. Alot of them even have a basic 
firewall built-in.
