I use Texas instrument based wireless PCMICA cards in my laptops and
they work fine. Mine is the 22Mb variety - very cheap and I have had it
working for 12 months now. If you want the installation to be a doddle
then just buy the Linuxant driver wrapper for USD19.95 (I think that's
the price) or use ndiswrapper which is free. These "wrap" the windows
drivers so that they can be used by Linux. The purists probably won't
like it but I am pragmatic about these things. If it makes it go, I am
happy.
Linuxant can be found at http://www.linuxant.com/company/
Neither soft modems nor wireless cards are a concern these days with
Mandrake 10.1 as the modems are detected and installed out of the box as
are most wireless cards and bluetooth.
Your choice is very broad so don't despair.
