I did not say am not happy with 2.5.4a. Just wondered if this one really is 
the most recent since its date is quite a way back.

Perhaps I got used to the common release frequency these days. Quite often if 
you pick the most recent code and check a few weeks later then it's already 
outdated. Apparently not so in this case which actually can be a good sign.

I took the 2.5.4a from here ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/non-gnu/flex/

However, the 2.4.31 version from soureforge appears to be more recent. 
Provided I count properly with the assumption that '.31' is newer than '.4'
