Another trick is to bring up a screenful of horizonal and vertical lines 
and press auto-adjust again (any spreadsheet app should do). The 
auto-adjust on my Hitachi LCD greatly improves the crisp pixel placement 
when it has some crisp source data to work with.

Something else to consider is your antialiasing for LCD monitors. While 
CRTs are fairly good a colouring a single point, LCD pixels are usually 
constructed as a series of three (RGB) pixels in close proximity. If you 
provide hints as to the placement of these sub-pixels to your font 
antialising system you can further improve clarity. (Hint: If you can see 
occasional coloured pixels showing through on black text you've probably 
got this hinting wrong)
