I must not have read the original question carefully enough; had
I realised that you didn't try this, I'd have suggested it.  The
ability of this type of screen to set itself up is one of the
big benefits, IMO.

I installed a Benq 17" monitor recently and, rather than spend
time trying to work out the XF86Config, I just plugged it in
where the old Sony 21" unit had been and watched to see how it
coped.  It just printed a little "nonpreset mode!" message, and
then adjusted itself beautifully.  This is nice stuff.
