I have to jump in here. Keep as little in /etc/hosts as possible. It
isn't scalable and will end up coming back to bite at the least opportune
moments.
As a consultant I've had many problems exaserbated by clients reliance on
inconsitent hosts files throughout their networks. When I examine a new
client's network I pay close attention to the state of their dns and make
recommendations to fix/improve it as soon as possible. Ultimately this
will save me time and them money.
Dns is also a very saleable skill in the job market too.
