I've actually tried that /etc/rc.local it had issues, like at one stage it
stopped me from getting into X, nfi how it did that, but all I can say if
thankyou for Interactive Startup :)

PS I'm new to Linux, but not new to computers. I have been a unix user, but
not admin.

Try putting the commands directly in /etc/rc.local
