[H-GEN] mandrake can't detect correct PCMCIA card

Hi
Trying to set up Mandrake 10 on a laptop (P2, 192M RAM) and that uses a 3COM
EtherLink III LAN PC Card. It's labelled as a 3C589C and the driver that is
available in the list in Mandrake is pretty close to that, but when I let it
try to auto-configure it says it fails and asks if I want to do it manually.
I have no idea how to do that.
Someone suggested I download Knoppix and use its apparently superior h/w
detection to figure it out, which I tried to do, but it wouldn't finish
booting. It detected the cpu, ram, set up the ramdisk, etc., but stopped
shortly after. No cursor, CD parked... nothing.
I have Telstra cable and a router that I use to hook up to the net and other
pcs around the house.
Ultimately I'd like to get wireless working on the laptop (already have the
card for a windows laptop) but one thing at a time....
Anyone have any suggestions on how to approach this? I'm relatively new to
linux and very new to hacking around in config files, etc.
Let me know if you need more info, etc.
thanks a lot.
David
