The horrible noises aren't a good sign, but if anything will recover the data R-Studio will.
It took something like eight hours to scan a 40 GB Win98 drive that had lost it's MBR and 
maybe it's partition table.

As a once off experience it was satisfying, but I don't have the Linux module. Whether the 
demo would satisfy your needs I haven't a clue, but if it was me I'd look into it.
