Have you read the man page for the ppp implementation you're
using?  Every one I've ever read spells it out clearly.

What FAQ?  And why such a small MTU?  I've used 1492 on Telstra
ADSL lines around Australia for ages.  On the systems I use, the
correct MTU is negotiated automatically, although you can set it
if you need to.
