Oh, and I guess someone should come out and be honest about the _real_
benefit of only optimising after profiling: adopting that as a philosophy
lets you pontificate about questions like this without having to make sure
your suggestions are right -- there's almost never enough information
initially to do accurate testing, so anything you suggest has a good
chance of being wrong anyway; but if it is, it's not your fault: it's
the original questioners!
