[H-GEN] Key Mapping Problem (I think)

I have been doing some work with a client who _was_ using a serial
dialup connection from point A to point B, each end with a couple of
computers coupled via serial cables through a Stallion board into a
Multiplexer (MUX) and then over a modem to modem telephone line. Each
end _had_ almost identical configurations except that the central server
is running Red Hat 5.0 (Hurricane) and an Arrow accounting package, The
client machines are Win 95 and 98. There are also one or two terminals
at the server end also channelled through a Stallion Board.
This _was_ working very well until one very stormy night when one end
was blown out - modem, MUX, Stallion and Printer went to heaven.
The owner of the business had already been advised by Arrow that Linux
will no longer be supported and that he would have to upgrade
(upgrade???) to Windows. He does not want to do this yet but in the
meantime wanted to come some way towards this future upgrade but putting
in a better and faster point A/B networking solution. Rightly or
wrongly, we put in a 512/512 ADSL connction at both ends running VPN
through two Netcomm 5580's and, at the end where the MUX went bye bye,
we installed an ePipe with the serial "ends" plugging straight in and
then out through an ethernet connection to the 5580.
This all also works well _except that_ the function keys are now no
longer recogised by the Arrow program on the Linux box at the other
end. These function keys _are_ important to invoke printing and other
tasks while the operator is in a form (job or invoice entry forms).
It seems to my tired old brain that there has been a change of key
mapping translation with the change of mode of our connection. If I am
right in my thinking, how can this be fixed so that the "far end" can
work normally without upsetting the server end where clients and
terminals are still connected via a stallion board and are functioning
correctly?
This has been one of those jobs which should have been simple but is now
a month long "sucker". Help would be much appreciated. If I need to
post log files, configuration settings etc, please tell me what you need
to know.
Regards,
Rick
