Dear General,
I'm relatively new to linux and I have a spot of trouble. I
just recently installed Debian (from Redhat 8) and I have sort of worked
out the apt-get thing (somehow I managed to get a combination of testing
and unstable).
My problem is this: debian worked fine for some time but one
day I found that mozilla would crash - It would load but when I went to
the first page it would crash. No moans, groans or error messages.
Just silently crashed. Somehow I found that if I ran mozilla as root
with no settings ie.
>su
?password?
>mozilla &
it would work fine. Beautifully in fact. But if I ran mozilla as root
(su -) or as my normal user it would crash. It seems that there must be
some setting (perhaps a shell variable) that is making it crash. I
found that the problem was replicated with abiword - does exactly the
same thing - so it is not a mozilla problem.
My problem is that I don't know where to go from here - if
there would be any log files that would mention anything etc etc.
Any suggestions ?
thanks in advance,
Regards Jim Brown
