Correct, but in this case he hadn't set-up anything like that to monitor
traffic.
Personally, I like snort[1] for network monitoring, as it has other nice
features. As for the modem counters, it really depends on the modem. A lot
of the current modems do have accurate logging and offer it as an audit
facility to help manage network usage and billing. The modems that have a
SNMP interface would be the ones that "should" be more accurate :)
