To add another datapoint to the original thread (lest I be accused of
bandwidth-wasting frivolity) the next release of Mac OS X will feature
an automatically-encrypted (with AES-128) home directory:

I recall reading, although I can't find a reference now, that this
feature was added after some prodding by (an agency of) the
U.S. government. The impression that I got was that it was so that
Macs would be more palatable for sensitive work. (There's some
