Yep I am pretty sure you had to be helstra to SMS that machine.
I could be wrong to I personally don't use my phone.

There's a coke machine at Brisbane Central train station that will give
you a coke if you SMS it.  The cost is charged to your phone bill.  Seems
like a heck of a lot less technology than the article describes.  Of
course, you have to be with a specific provider (probably Telstra, I don't
remember).
