I belive that the actual location can be chosen at compile time so it may 
change depending on whether you built from sources or depending on which 
package you installed from. I found the relevant files on my debian system 
with the following command:

$ man vim

As with any reasonable man page, when you want to find the files used by 
an application look for the FILES section.
