Well, as some background, Paul has been exposed to my stand up sys admin 
routines that often involve rants about bad software. Paul has basically 
summed up why I don't believe Sendmail is the answer.

.mc is scary simply because it's poorly documented, hard to read, and 
quite simply the wrong way to go about configuration. There is no 
performance gain to be had with the .cf file. There's no usability 
advantage to be had with the .cf/.mc approach. There's even no upwards 
compatibility to be had with the .mc file. Even after years of 
professional exposure to sendmail, I have to go hunting through m4 files 
and hitting google to find that obscure option. The bat book is useless 
in many regards here.

I'm not going to suggest software like Exim or Postfix is perfect, but 
useful verbosity in configuration is good. queue_at_load_average is a 
better configuration variable name than define('confQUEUE_LA'...
