I wouldn't have a clue about compiling kernels so I'm just using the

Obvious question: Do you have usb support compiled into the kernel? You
probably do if you are using a default kernel, but if you've had to
'roll your own', you may not have correct support. (I know it took me a
couple of tries to get it right for my motherboard.)
