I have set up linux on a couple of 7200 macs. I tried Mandrake,Yellowdog
and Gentoo, and out of Mandrake and Yellowdog, I personally found
yellowdog easier, but this was a couple of years ago. For gentoo I
stopped about half-way through the install as I ran out of time and
haven't had a chance to go back to it, but it was definitely more time
consuming to setup (at least for someone how hasn't experienced gentoo
before).

You will also still need the mac OS installed, as this is used in the
boot process. Hardware support seems quite good, and I was using a
7200/200 mac for a firewall for sometime. I think it will depend on what
your friend wants to do with the machine. Assuming a firewall/gateway
configuration, I would try yellowdog first,

cheers
