I'm used to the way I had to do it for Syllable/AtheOS [1], where you
configured it using a small text editor modifying menu.lst, then reboot
off the first boot floppy (which had GRUB on it) and pressing C to get
to the console.
[1] AtheOS is a Unix-like operating system (written from scratch with
some driver code ported from Linux & other opensource projects) aimed at
the desktop. <http://www.atheos.cx/> Development on AtheOS has stopped
at version 0.3.7, Syllable is the new successor of this operating system
