This turned out to be Good Advice after the earlier fiasco with
LILO. I ran grub-install, edited /boot/grub/menu.lst based on
Michael's example suitably edited for my setup, and booted up.
I made a typo in the config file that caused a kernel panic with
a singularly unhelpful error message. However, rebooting and
typing the correct stuff at grub allowed me to fix the mistake
easily and then I could boot one of my Linux kernels or Windows
as I wished. The experience with GRUB was most satisfactory. I
recommend it. I certainly don't recommend LILO.
Thanks to all for the help, both useful and less so.
