These days microsoft go *straight* for the jugular: they wipe
*everything* not just the MBR.

Buy a PC with WinXP from many vendors and all you get is a "Recovery
CD" (in place of a proper install CD) which wipes the WHOLE drive.
$COW_ORKER is currently having extreme pain[1] trying to get Linux on to
a new laptop while still keeping a licensed copy of Win XP....

I'm /so/ glad their anti-competitive practices got stamped out by that
antitrust lawsuit...
