Exactly. For example, to install Samba under Red Hat, assuming you've
got an RHN subscription (demo/basic/whatever) for that machine, you
can just issue a
# /usr/sbin/up2date samba
For Debian,
# apt-get samba
or you could use one of the plethora of simpilified package selectors
that exist for both distributions.

I'd tend to agree. This is part of the reason I've stuck with Red Hat,
because I don't get these issues. I've found Debian to be similar in
many regards, not having these issues either.
The other thing to keep in mind is that Linux and the BSD variants are
all like Windows in one respect, and that's hardware. Just because
it's Open Source doesn't mean it's going to work with every piece of
hardware you throw at it. Pick and choose only quality parts you know
will work, and you'll be in hardware heaven.
