OK, my brother finally got a new hard drive for his computer so my old
13gig drive has been returned to me. I want to put this in my linux
router/firewall/server b0x as the primary hard drive, replacing the
2.5gig drive that hasn't been enough disk space for about 3 months now.
I'm wanting to setup a proper server space on the drive using samba, and
an intranet (which we already have going, complete with databases and
php frontends).
What I'm curious about, is how people would suggest the best use of the
disk space available is. The samba share needs to be accessible by
people who don't have a user account on the b0x (read-only), and
writable by everyone who does have an account on the b0x.
What I'd also like to do, is finally get dhcp working as I know it
should. (In case folks don't remember, my dhcp was assigned it's own
interface an IP after about an hour which was really throwing a spanner
in the works.) Then, I'd like to setup firewall rules that are different
depending on the IP the machine has. (Soon to have windows b0xen that we
don't want accessing stuff other than web and email. Also handy when
friends come by with a laptop and want to check their email, but then go
on to download heaps of stuff on our 3gig limited cable.)
I'd love to know what tools there are to do this, as well as how
difficult it would be to do make the rules 'by hand'. (The IPTables man
page is helpful to a point, but I guess I don't have the understanding
necessary to get the most out of it - as evidenced by my confusion over
pre-routing and forwarding.)
All suggestions appreciated. I plan to be at today's meeting in order to
accomplish the task.
Sandra.
