For cable select to work, there must be some sort of difference between the
two connectors so that the HD can tell which one it is connected to. Like
floppies, that can tell if they are the first or second drive due to the
twist in the cable, cable select cables also have a twist. The twist makes
sure that different signals are routed to different pins, thus providing
the difference needed for cable selection to work.

Keeping in mind that HD manufacturers like to bend standards, as was
mentioned before, if you configure a HD to use cable select, but you use an
ordinary cable, things won't run real well. Conversley, you probably need
to set a HD to cable select if you are using a cable select cable.

My ASUS A7V333 handles HD configured for master / slave with no problem.
As I mentioned before, I have only ever seen a cable select cable once, and
they guy who owned it wasn't gonna give it to me, so I have never played
with one, and all the above may have been spoken from the wrong end of my body.
