Yep, I've seen this in action, Windows XP supports this feature, and in
some cases, this would be useful, but I don't think it's supported
natively by X.  You certainly can't switch resolutions on the fly.  The
virtual resolution will be the same, reguardless of the physical
resolution.  XFree86 4.3.x is susposedly able to switch virtual
resolutions on the fly, but I've yet to grab a copy. (which I may do so
to get X running on our FreeBSD box - for some reason it wasn't able to
install it)
