Oh, you'd be surprised.  Some otherwise quite intelligent and
reasonable people simply cannot be made to see sense on this topic.  I
have tried and tried for years.

That's a common misconception.  The thing is that most people will
just "scan over" small amounts of quoted text, and if they need to be
reminded of what you're responding to, they can scan up a paragraph or
two and it will be right there, which is actually much more
convenient.

This leads to email that looks like this and the "paragraph by
paragraph" style which is used so effectively on USENET.
