faubackup is quite nifty -- it doesn't do compression, but it hardlinks
files that don't change; and you can set it up to do things like "keep
a backup from the 1st of the month for twelve months, and the 1st day of
the week for the past eight weeks, and every day for the past seven days,
and every hour for the past day".
