I ran leafnode for several years but in the end moved away from it. It
had a few minor bugs (probably solved now) and would only pull down info
on groups touched within the last x days. This is good for bandwidth
conservation, but doesn't suite members of the "now" generation very well.

In the end I went for another solution:

Suck & INN. Suck pulls the news down (acting as a client) and feeds it
into INN. This give you a full featured nntp server to use. I also fed
mailing lists into INN for a couple of years. Later this proved to be too
bandwidth intensive (since it pulls full groups down) so as usenet grew I
went for another solution:

Until about 2 weeks ago I used nntpcache. This software is subject to
non-GPL licencing but is free for "unix hobbyists" or some such. I got an
email from the author last year and simply had to reply advising him that
I was indeed a hobbyist and was using nntpcache for personal consumption
only. Never got a response from him so I guess he was happy with this.

Nntpcache is a great tool overall.

Bandwidth allowing I'd like to go back to using suck & INN. Now I'm on
cable here in Canada (no bandwidth ceilings or volume charging) I'll have
to look into it. Right after I buy a new box & install Debian on it :)
