[H-GEN] Sound card problems...

Heya folks. Got a wacky problem here that I hope someone can help me
with.

I bought a sound card today, and I was looking forward to getting some
multi-media back to my system again. I installed it, and then went on to
try and get the software to configure it and use it. Hooboy!

I grabbed sndconfig (sure I run Debian, but I use what I know...), and
ran that in an aterm. It got to the sample sound to run, but it just
kept looping. Then my system stopped responding totally, except for the
looping soundbyte. I reset my system.

I tried again in a console, before going to X. It started looping again,
so I ctrl+C'd it and it seemed to (sort of) work. I tried to get some
programs to use the new sound functionality (play, mpg123, xmms), but
nothing managed to read any files. Then it froze again.

I reset and tried again, but this time X wasn't stable. It kept turning
the monitor off about every second. I managed to see that the clock was
getting set to over an hour ahead, and then dropping back, but that ~75
minute jump would set off dpms or something.

I tried several other things, but when I tried esd to get sound going,
it looped the sound-byte and then froze. Again. So I reset and removed
the card, and there's no problems now.

OK, now for the card details:
  Cobra AW-840 (C-Media CMI8738) AOpen PCI

Anyone able to help me with this? I'd like to get this card working.

TIA
Shane Ravenn
