I have just started a Gentoo 1.4_rc3 installation here, therefore I have
all of the core Gentoo files, and also a fair bit of the KDE 3.1/xfree86
4.3.0 stuff here, too. Currently it is sitting at around 500MB of
source code.
I'm looking at running Gentoo/ltsp at a client site - actually, at a
number of sites this client has. I'll also run it here. The reason I'm
looking at Gentoo for this use rather than Debian, Red Hat or any other
distro, is that I can optimize the entire distro for the architecture of
the server - a P4 in this case (and in reality, due to gcc bugs with the
'-march="pentium4"' directive, the code will be P3 optimized, not P3
optimized - yet). I'll also prelink where appropriate.
Running it here also means that I can download updates, compile and
package them as binaries, and distribute these binaries to the remote
sites - meaning the remote sites will not have to compile from source.
Same for lindows). LinuxFormat mag is a

LinuxFormat is a very, very decent mag.

Knoppix is quite good. I have a Knoppix 3.1 CD here (somewhere) but 3.2
has been released with quite a bit of updated software on it.

Not *really* that far, either!

Bluecurve. That was the only reason to go to 8.0 - oh, and a whole lot
of new bugs. :) RH 8.1 looks like it will fix a lot of the issues that
people have reported with 8.0, and although I have not used the 8.1
pre-releases, the people I know who are using them are quite happy with
them.

That is another advantage of a more recent distro, normally, than an
older one - a lot of these security updates should have been
incorporated into the base product. Of course, there will still likely
be updates available, but there should be less. Tony is a great hoarder
of Red Hat updates - I think he's the unofficial Humbug Red Hat update
mirror! :)
