That's the truth :)  They all have their own purpose, advantages and
disadvantages, style and quirks.  Whatever works, whatever you feel
comfortable with, whatever you know (or get to know).

Indeed, they are obviously heading towards providing a distro that
will come with a very usable point'n'click with a "smart" desktop.
There's some sense in it: ultimately, the desktop is the thing that
will deliver linux to the masses (home, business, corporate).

As for bluecurve in rh8.0... imho it is still maturing.  I'm looking
forward to see what 8.1 is like.

The 2.6.x kernel is supposed to be here mid-year, that should be
worth an upgrade.  So I might wait until later this year by which
time most of the distros will be using it.
