I do something similar to this with my home computer which I "lug" to our
local lug (pardon the pun).  You are quite correct in your assumption about
the network.  I overcome it (in Mandrake) by using the connection
configuration wizard and forcing the eth0 connection to be "down".  I can
save this configuration and then reactivate it later. when needed again.
