I can thoroughly recommend an iBook.  They work very well with
Debian GNU/Linux.  You can get a well configured system (base
model, total 640MB RAM, wireless card) for less than AUD 2500
brand new (academic pricing from www.infinitesystems.com.au/

I've not tried the internal modem; however, I'm told it can be
made to work with a binary-only driver.  The external video only
works under GNU/Linux when I power on and then immediately close
the lid.

I don't care about the modem and I expect the external video
problem to be fixed in the near future.
