Thanks for the information, but I really know all of that and that is not
the question that I'm asking (the http://www.plig.org/xwinman/ link is
useful thou).

I probably didn't explain what I'm asking .... basically what I am trying
to decide is this:

a) Do I go with a desktop, and if so which (KDE or Gnome or <insert
others>)?
- or -
b) Decide on a window manager first and work up from there?

The knowledge that I don't have is really in the area of the desktops, what
they contain and how "pluggable" are to different window managers/dekstops.
ie KDE with kvm and gnome with sawfish, etc.
