Besides the other tools and methods already mentioned, partimage and
parted are also available, which are more like ghost in their
functionality (saving and restoring partitions as images).  They
work very well (even for ntfs), and partimage can work across a
network.  Most rescue or cdrom-based distros come with them, and
more recently I have been using Knoppix[1] for these purposes on
many occasions.

  [1] strangely, the 2003-06-06 version seems to be missing parted,
  which is essential for resizing filesystems once they have been
  re-imaged from a source that came from a partition of a different
  size.

Another tool that you may find "most excellent" is mondo (and
mindi): http://www.mondorescue.org/  Among other things, it will
backup your system onto bootable cdroms so that you can restore it
that way.
