Have you tried Kino (http://kino.schirmacher.de/article/archive/0/) 
and/or Cinelerra (http://heroinewarrior.com/cinelerra.php3). 
Unfortunately I need a computer upgrade before I will be able to even 
capture video reliably so I haven't played with these for a while so I 
can't really comment on how good they are.  Kino was looking promising 
about 18 months ago when I had a quick fiddle with it.
