Since it is the in house software that breaks, I guess they would have
source code.  As you already suggested, rewriting that software is probably
a good idea.  You may not have to rewrite it all, just track down the
broken bit and see if you can work around it.

I couldn't help much more without further details, but didn't you say you
where going to email with some details of this job at the last meeting? 
I've spent most of my time since then getting familiar with thin client
setups.
