Speaking of mainstream reporting of computer vulnerabilities, I was
happily channel hopping on Foxtel yesterday, when I saw that the Cisco
IOS vulnerability <http://www.cert.org/advisories/CA-2003-15.html>
made its way onto Fox News.

Admittedly, the analysis of said vulnerability was a little patchy (I
think it was only a headlines-on-the-half-hour piece), but I think
it's indicative of the larger trend that you identified.
