Apache 1.3, especially on older versions of Solaris, is known to have
occasional memory leaks in its children (or rather, the libraries they
use). It has a way of combating that - the MaxRequestsPerChild
directive. I believe it is set to 0 by default, which means a child
never exits unless it is in excessive of the MaxSpareServers. Try
setting it to something smaller, say 5000 or so, and see how it goes.
